Rain Mini-Smackdown, Part 3: Soul Men

Y'all have come up with some good Rain Smackdown nominees. Unfortunately, some of owners of some of the rights of some of the songs aren't keen on letting their babies visit blogs via embedding. "Purple Rain" by Prince and "Rain" by Oran "Juice" Jones are a couple of examples. But fear not, there are other soulful rain songs out there. Oran and Prince got nothing on The Temptations:

The Temptations could dance and sing, old school. John suggested Milli Vanilli. No doubt, they could dance, too; though the folks actually doing the singing weren't pretty enough to make it to video- a proud tradition adopted by Black Box and the Beijing Olympic Committee:

Guess we'll do one more nominee or set of nominees tomorrow, then we'll let the Smackdown commence.

How about "Lay Down, Candle in the Rain by Melanie and the Edwin Hawkins Singers. For those of you not around in 1970 or don't remember it, here is a link:

It wouldn't allow me to embed it (thanks Dave for showing me). The video is good. Listen to the whole song the beginning she is just speaking.
Anyone remember this one? Was always a favorite of mine.

Amazing. And so fitting for these times.

Melanie's song is great. There are also Box of Rain by the Grateful Dead, Rain King by Counting Crows, I think it's Going to Rain Today by Judy Collins, Buckets of Rain by Bob Dylan, The Sky is Crying by Stevie Ray Vaughn, Let It Rain by Clapton, Feels Like Rain by John Hiatt, Fistful of Rain by Warren Zevon and Hard Rain is Gonna Fall by Dylan.

Tam, that is a great song. I'd never heard it before (though I remember Melanie from "Brand New Key" and "Look What They've Done to My Song (Ma)"). I was worth the nine and a half minute listen. I'm not sure why you can't embed on comments, but I never can either. I can link, but not embed.

Sunny, great to see you, and what a lot of rain songs! Hold on, let me write all those down...

Ride on Time by Black Box is my favorite ass shaking song. I don't care if they were sued.

And that Melanie song was nine minutes of torture. Sorry Tam and Dave.

Speaking of torture, I tried to sing the Milli Vanilli song at karaoke. Not good. I should have lip synced it too.

Well, John, that's why they make more than one flavor of ice cream.

I really dug the Temptations, Col. They sounded like they really meant whatever they sang.
