Congrats to Oldest.
I've mentioned a time or seven that my oldest child, Davis, is a senior at Sewanee. Sewanee requires its seniors to take comprehensive exams in their major covering the span of their time at the University. Stressful times, I'm told. In any event, Davis took his English comps a week ago, and passed "with Distinction", having scored in the top five percent of his peers. He's a double major, which means he's got to do this again next semester in his other major, Classical Languages (Latin and Greek). Anyway, I'm proud of him.

Congrats Dave on raising such a fine young man. Double Major? Wow, that is a lot of work. Great to see a pic of him. Looks like you've done good there Dave!
People still speak Latin? My Latin teacher in high school was my mom's Spanish teacher when my mom was in high school. Talk about ancient history!
Maybe your son can explain to me why I took two years of Latin...
Thanks, Tam. Davis is a good kid. He didn't require much work. The others? Well, they require a bit more "parenting".
Star, I got Davis one of these T-Shirts with the phrase "si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes". He dug it.
(The others are wonderful, too. Just more work. I love 'em all).
That's fantastic. Good for him. It does remind me of that scene in She's Having a Baby (most underrated 80s movie ever) where Kevin Bacon gets his degrees in Elizabethan Poetry and Romance Languages.
"What skills do you have?" his wife asks him.
He writes a bunch of lies real well on his resume and gets a job in advertising.
hmm, he'll do well in Latin America with those skills!
As an English major ... I'd highly advise some post-grad work in welding.
:-)
Good on you and good for young master Davis.
(and you can sure see he is a Matthews(that's a compliment))
Saw your blog on a Sewanee Alert.
Congrats on your son attending Sewanee. The mountain is a special place. We moved here 3 years ago and love it.
If you plan to attend graduation in May, we have a short term rental available. Visit us at http://redoakhollow.blogspot.com
It's more than the standard place to stay up here. You can even do a little fishing and hiking on our 30acres.
Sewanee is a small world and just saying hi.
Thanks, Kate, Chase and John. He wants to teach for a couple of years and then be an Episcopal priest.
I enjoyed "She's Having a Baby", too (though I always get full after about half a baby). Hey, and now with bacon!
Chase, I'm actually trying to talk him into law school, but after watching me manage to not make much money practicing law, well, why not welding?
Yeah, John, I can't deny any of my kids. Glad that's not a bad thing.
