Recently I took the Lads in for an eye exam. We stopped in at the handy Wal-Mart Supercenter for the exam. Let me be more candid: we were at Wal-Mart, and I thought we might as well get an eye exam since we had time and it was so convenient. Anyway, I got one for myself while I was there. Five hundred "uncovered expense" dollars later, the Lads and I each had glasses ordered. My unlined bi-focals were the most expensive.
They arrived. Now what to do. Wear them? Glasses? But, we look... different. At thirteen OMG years old, the Lads have an excuse for their vanity. Me? Not so much.
Anyway, Taylor boldly agreed to model his pair. Glasses, sadly, address only myopia, not attitude.

I'm reminded of that scene in Major League when Charlie "Wild Thing" Sheen has to get glasses,"
Coach, "Seeing's the important thing."
Fellow player, seeing Sheen in the glasses, "It's not THAT important."
Star: "I'd like to get contacts," I say to my eye Doc.
Doc: "OK, when do you wear your glasses?"
Star: "When I use the computer, and when I drive at night...oh and when I watch TV."
Doc: "Oh, so you wear your glasses when you want to see?"
Star: "Well I can see why YOU'RE the Doctor. Smart @$$."
Tyler actually argued with the eye doc that seeing wasn't that important (but Tyler had to start wearing them when they played videogames against each other, because Taylor was starting to whip his butt). Teenagers. What are you gonna do?
glasses are hot!
Wait a minute...you work for the public defenders office and you don't have eye exam coverage with your medical benefits? You do have medical benefits, don't you? I am appalled that you work as a public defender and the county, state, whoever it is that supplies your paycheck, does not provide eye care coverage. It's the least they could do....Oh and btw, tell your son he looks great!!
Col and Tam, I told Taylor y'all are fine looking ladies and he should be feeling good. He said it doesn't count unless you're in middle school (or high school. He figures a boy can hope).
...and Tam, the one decent thing about the recent switch from the Public Defender's Office from local to State control is that optical care is now offered. It's kind of expensive and not very good, but it least it's now offered. It wasn't when I got the specs. I bad thing about the change-over, is previously covered conditions are probably now going to be "pre-existing". From our new orientation, it looks like the State will consider us new insureds, in spite of the fact that we've already been in the same system and haven't moved our desks for years (well, a year and a half for me).
jrt,
Why do you need insurance to cover a completely predictable health expense? I get an eye exam and new glasses about once every two years. This year, for two pairs of glasses and an eye exam, I paid around $160.00. That runs $80/year. In SD's case, with the lads, his yearly expense would average $250. You would need to compare that cost to the amount that he would pay in premiums (including the employer paid portion) to see if insurance even makes sense.
It would have made sense to get it earlier, if it'd been available. Probably doesn't now. The Lads wear their glasses infrequently now, and generally only at home, so I figure I won't need to replace them for a couple of years. I'll get eyeglass insurance next October, when I figure I'll need to replace their specs.
beware, the ever-patient wife had that "insurance," it's about as useful as dental "insurance," in that it covers an exam and offer's bogus discounts on selected frame styles that you wouldn't be caught dead in ... complete theft.
I'll look close at it, Chase... if I can see it.
SuperD,
You may be getting the boys replacement glasses sooner than you think.
Someone your age may take care of their glasses, but at that age ? Be realistic ! Mine were a small fortune. I'm very careful with them. Ask Andy. I once freaked out when I dropped them at his place, outside ! I couldn't see to find them. Your bro is very patient.
Andy is a good guy, Lynne. I get this image of Thelma from Scooby-Doo feeling around on the ground saying, "My Glasses! I can't find my glasses!".
John in Il, what if you get poked in the eye? ;)
Pirates, be ye.
